String Tension

Tension Loss

When you have your racket strung you should have the tension measured. A few weeks later the tension should be checked again. You should find the strings have lost some of their tension.

The amount will vary between different strings. You will have to adjust the tension you use to take this loss into account.

Most strings should belong to one of the following categories

Tension Loss notes

Normal Loss

Most standard synthetic strings are in this category. You do not need to make any adjustment to the tension you normally use.

The recommended tension range shown on the racket should be used.

Low Loss

There have been several strings introduced with special features including lower loss of tension.

Most players will need to reduce the string tension by about 5% with this type of string.

High Loss

Some strings designed to provide improved response also have a greater loss of tension.

Most players will need to increase the string tension by about 5% with this type of string.

Summary

Most strings (but not all) can be used in any racket. You will normally need to make adjustments to obtain the correct tension for your racket
